Ready – RELAX – Get Set - Go! A method for combating procrastination.
Everyone procrastinates from time to time, but some people struggle more than others with using their talents and time effectively. For many people procrastination is caused by anxiety, but the unfortunate reality is that for many people, procrastination also causes anxiety.
You might feel overwhelmed by the number of tasks on your to-do list, but you repeatedly put off starting these tasks. However, the longer you wait the more anxious you become. It is a vicious cycle. Luckily there are ways to combat anxiety-induced procrastination.
Ready: On a sheet of paper write down a list of tasks. On a second sheet of paper break down the larger tasks into realistic, measurable steps. Your second sheet of paper is your to-do list.
Relax: Now that you have created your list, you might feel overwhelmed. Set the list aside. Breathe deeply and evenly. Visualize a calming landscape, or look at a picture that makes you calm. When you feel calm, move on.
Get Set: Think of what you want to accomplish. Visualize success and say to yourself, “I feel energized. I am ready to act. I will start now.” Repeat this to yourself several times.
Go: Take the first step. Complete the first task on your list. Grab a big, fat marker and scratch it off. Once you complete the first task, those that follow will feel easier.
[Repeat]: Go back to your list and look at the next task. Follow through the system again “relax,” “get set,” and “go” to continue your newfound productivity.
